Aceh International Business Summit 2010

November 10, 2010 in Jakarta and November 12 through 14 in Banda Aceh, Indonesia.  Hosted by KADIN, American Indonesian Chambers of Commerce (AICC), Aceh Business Club (ABC), Aceh Business Working Group (ABWG) and Aceh Government. The Summit is also supported by the Coordinating Ministry for Economic Affairs.

The objectives of the summit are to explore various businesses and investments in Aceh and to reach out to international and national traders by exchanging ideas, discussing potential business partnership between Aceh and various groups around the world who will participate in the economic development of Aceh, and helping to ensure that the region does not fall back into insurgence.

The participants are estimated approximately 200 people, consists of delegates from AICC, American Indonesian Chamber of Commerce (KADIN America), Chamber of Commerce of European Union, Asean, Middle East, Turkey, and Chamber of Commerce of Indonesia (KADIN Indonesia), and Aceh Business Club (ABC).

Background

Aceh is one of the provinces of Indonesia and designated as a Special Territory of Indonesia, located on the northern tip of the Island of Sumatra and also the region of Indonesia that was decimated by December 2004 tsunami and earthquake, one of the worst natural disasters in history.

Since the past centuries, Aceh region has a strategic position as the gate of trading and cultural traffic, which has been connecting East and West. It is known as a transit place of Chinese, European, Indian and Arab merchants. This relationship made Aceh region as the first entrance of culture and religion into the Southeast-Asian Archipelago.

Aceh possesses one of Indonesia's largest reserves of oil and natural gas. A number of multinational corporations maintain a presence in Aceh. Aceh's main sources of income are petroleum and natural gas, fertilizer, and agriculture. Aceh also has natural resources that have not yet been exploited.

Many potential natural resources have an important role to activate domestic economic of Aceh, especially mining and industrial sector. The two sectors contributed 685 of the total GDP. However, agriculture sector including plantations, which covers approximately 60% of total area, is estimated to grow fast to keep its development equal with that of the development of non-agricultural sectors.

Aftermath tsunami and the considerable international attention bring an opportunity to the transition from a long conflict war to peace and bring a lot of hope for Acehnese people to see a better future for economic development and investment in Aceh.

Therefore, after six years of struggle to recover from the devastating tsunami and decades of bloody insurgent uprising, Aceh is seemingly taking a further step to unplug itself from the dependency on public funding and diminishing gas proceeds.

This new environment encourage us to organize an international business meeting, called “Aceh International Business Summit”, in October 2010 in Banda Aceh. This meeting will play a key role in promoting opportunities in Aceh to international and national businesses. The meeting will invite local and international businessmen, and potential investors and stakeholders from U.S., Eropean, Asian, Middle-East, Turkey, and Indonesia itself.
